BIO

“We have only one story. All novels, all poetry, are built on the never-ending contest in ourselves of good and evil. ”

-John Steinbeck, East of Eden

"We have art in order not to die of the truth",

-Nietzsche, The Will to Power

The work of Hélène Planquelle' explores the shadow part of ourselves and our relationship with others as well as the way our inner struggles get reflected into the world’s.

As a self-taught painter, Hélène Planquelle owes her intellectual curiosity and thirst for new knowledge to her humanity studies. Initially passionate about literature and philosophy, over time she turned to increasingly diverse fields of knowledge to nourish the subject matter of her works. At once deeply conceptual and powerfully figurative, her work is rooted in a rich soil of scholarly references, in fields ranging from psychoanalysis and philosophy to ethics and social sciences, attachment theories, evolutionary psychology and the study of religious texts and myths.

From a plastic standpoint, Hélène Planquelle conducts research into the depth of the image, the interplay of reflections, mirrors and optics, and the sensory aura of works whose physical experience cannot be replaced.

An admirer of great figurative artists such as Salvador Dali and Ernest Pignon Ernest, her works interweave the spiritual and the carnal, the sacred and the profane, the human and the animal. Hélène Planquelle's work also draws on mankind's ancestral fascination with storytelling, and maintains a strong intertextuality thanks to the many quotations from which the titles of her different series are derived, a veritable treasure hunt for anyone wishing to put together the thousand and one pieces of the puzzle of her vision of the world.
